Logan Hicks: The Photographer’s Eye in Urban Stencil Art

Logan Hicks, born in 1971 in Baltimore, is an internationally acclaimed American artist celebrated for his unique stencil technique and photorealistic approach to urban art. A student at the Maryland Institute College of Art in the early 1990s, he began his career as a screen-printer before transitioning to stencil work—an evolution encouraged by his friendship with Shepard Fairey.

Residing in Brooklyn since 2007, Logan Hicks is often described as “a painter with a photographer’s eye.” Drawing from his own photographs, he layers up to fifteen stencil levels to craft compositions of remarkable precision. His work captures urban geometry, dramatic lighting effects, and nocturnal ambiances, while thoughtfully exploring themes of identity, solitude, and the complex interplay between humanity and its architectural surroundings.

A highlight of his oeuvre is the monumental mural The Story of My Life, executed on the iconic Bowery Wall at Houston Street in New York City. This work comprises over 1,000 stencils and portrays more than 150 individuals from Logan Hicks‘ personal life.

Logan Hicks‘s journey has led him to participate in significant international art events. He was one of two artists selected by Banksy to represent the United States at the Cans Festival in London in 2008. In 2010, he contributed a mural to Wynwood Walls in Miami—part of Tony Goldman’s visionary urban art initiative.
