Stencil
SNIK are a duo of internationally acclaimed British artists who combine the creation of hand-cut, multi-layered stencils with haunting, ethereal portraits born from a dual male/female perspective. This artisanal and progressive approach has enabled the duo to create works on walls all over the world. Their murals can be seen in places as diverse as Aberdeen (Scotland), Stavanger (Norway), Miami, Hong Kong and Paris. Away from the city streets, the duo are sought-after collectors of urban and contemporary art. The works and editions can take up to a year to create because of the complexity of the stencils, which are all cut by hand. Their stencils require incredibly precise cutting and trimming and meticulous compositional thinking. The simple aesthetic of upturned, tangled hair and floating fabrics is a modern examination of Pre-Raphaelite sensibilities. These peaceful subjects are associated with the duo's love of the natural world, capturing their reappropriation of our lives and environment over the decades and eras. This cycle of growth and decline has gradually taken on importance in the works, often created with site-specific intentions. It is this narrative of questioning and acceptance that SNIK pursues, and which has caught the attention of critics, art lovers and collectors alike.
